Calgary Summer Camp Highlights

STEM Activities: For both Preschool and Elementary levels.

  • Blast off a Rocket 1: Children will learn about rockets, make and launch an Alka Seltzer Rocket, play Bean Bag Rockets, and make a Lego Rocket.
  • Astronaut Mission 1: Children will learn about the sun and living in space, make an Astronaut Helmet, make an Astronaut Drink, play a memory game for what they would bring to space, and build a Lego Space Station.
  • Robotics and Coding 1: Children will learn about robots and programming robots, Program their Teacher to make a Sandwich, make a Mechanical Finger Model, and build a Lego Robot.
  • Night Sky and Galaxy 1: Children will learn about things such as the moon and objects in space (comets, asteroids, and meteoroids), make a Comet Model, do the Moonwalk Challenge, and build a Lego Satellite.
  • Building a Space Colony 1: Children will learn about planetary geology and life in space, Erupt a Volcano, make Spinning Rockets, have a Weightless Race, and build a Lego Space Colony. May also include an Astronaut Graduation (parents invited).

 

  • Blast off a Rocket 2: Children will learn about rockets, make and race Balloon Rockets, make a Straw Rocket, play Bean Bag Rockets, and make a Lego Rocket.
  • Astronaut Mission 2: Children will learn about the sun and living in space, make a Space Map, make an Astronaut Drink, play a memory game for what they would bring to space, and build a Lego Space Station.
  • Robotics and Coding 2: Children will learn about robots and programming robots, use Binary Code to Create a Necklace, play a Robotic Arm Relay, and build a Lego Robot.
  • Night Sky and Galaxy 2: Children will learn about things such as the moon and objects in space (comets, asteroids, and meteoroids), make Impact Craters like those on the Moon, make a Constellation, do the Moonwalk Challenge, and build a Lego Satellite.
  • Building a Space Colony 2: Children will learn about planetary geology and life in space, make Alien Slime, make Spinning Rockets, have a Weightless Race, and build a Lego Space Colony. May also include an Astronaut Graduation (parents invited).

Coding- ScratchJr (Preschool level):

  • Throw a dance party, make your cat move: Children will learn how ScratchJr operates and make their sprites Move Around. They will then create a project.
  • Make your cat turn, let’s play hide-and-seek: Children will learn how to make their sprites Turn and Hide/Show. They will then create a project.
  • Do something over and over, find your voice: Children will lean about loops (repeating) and Sounds/Speaking (Recording, Playing Sounds, Text Bubbles) in Scratch. They will then create a project.
  • Old MacDonald’s Farm: Children will make a farm project in Scratch, and have animal Sprites Move, Turn, Hide, Show, and Repeat.
  • Turn the page, change the pace: Children will learn how to Change the Background (Pages) and Setting the Speed of their sprites in Scratch. They will then create a project.
  • Stop and look, wait your turn: Children will learn about Waiting in Scratch. They will then create a project.
  • Build a snowman, pick a peach: Children will learn how to Draw a Sprite (a Snowman) and make a game involving Picking Peaches.
  • The Tortoise and the Hare: Children will create a project which will be a Race Between a Tortoise and a Hare.
  • Blast off, play tag: Children will learn how Characters Work Together in a Rocket Launch and in a Game of Tag. They will create both projects.
  • Cats Versus Birds: Children will create a single player game where a bird must avoid cats and get to a mushroom.

Coding- Scratch (Elementary level):

  • Add a sprite, add a backdrop, make it spin, glide around: Children will learn how Scratch operates, Adding Sprites and Backdrops, Spinning, and Gliding. They will then create a project.
  • Hide and show, add effects, change size, animate a sprite: Children will learn how to make Sprites Hide and Show, Add Effects to their sprites, Change the Size of their sprites. They will then create a project Animating a Sprite.
  • Animate a name, animate a character: Children will make a project animating the letters of their name. They will Animate another Sprite.
  • Make music, record a sound: Children will learn how to Make Music and Record a Sound in Scratch. They will then create a project.
  • Make it fly: Children will learn how to make it look like a sprite is Flying. They will then create a project using this.
  • Create animations that talk, create a story: Children will learn how to make sprites Talk and how to Create a Story. They will then create a project using this.
  • Pong game, use arrow keys, make a clicker game: Children will make a single player pong game, learn how to use the Arrow Keys for games, and make a Clicker Game.
  • Make a chase game, animate an adventure game: Children will make a Chase game, and make an Adventure game.
  • Video sensing: Children will learn how to use Video Sensing in Scratch. They will then create a project using this.
  • Hackathon – project planning, Design sprint, project feedback: Children will create a project about anything they want, using all they have learned about Programming and Scratch. They will be guided and given feedback, and then they will share their projects.
